How much does a website cost in 2026?

A professionally built business website in 2026 typically costs somewhere between a few thousand and twenty-five thousand dollars, depending on who builds it and what it has to do. Published 2026 pricing puts a do-it-yourself builder site at $100–$1,600, a freelance build at $500–$5,000, a mid-sized business site at $5,000–$25,000, and a large-agency custom build at$10,000–$100,000+. Then add yearly costs for the domain, hosting and upkeep. Below: where those numbers come from, what moves your price, and the questions that stop a quote from growing after you sign.

Website cost by who builds it

The single biggest factor in price is not the number of pages — it's who does the work and how much of it lands back on you. These are the 2026 ranges from two pricing guides we read for this article:

Who builds itTypical build costSource
Website builder you set up yourself$100 – $1,600OneLittleWeb
Freelance designer$500 – $5,000Webnode
Mid-sized business website$5,000 – $25,000OneLittleWeb
Large agency, custom build$10,000 – $100,000+Webnode

Sources: Webnode's 2026 website cost guide (May 2026) and OneLittleWeb's 2026 website cost guide (updated December 2025). OneLittleWeb notes its build figures exclude extras like SEO, copywriting and integrations.

The ranges overlap because the labels hide very different amounts of work. A $1,500 freelance site and a $5,000 freelance site might both be "five pages" — one is a template with your logo dropped in, the other is designed around how your customers actually decide to call you.

What pushes the price up (or down)

  1. Who writes the words. Copywriting is often excluded from a headline price. If you have to write every page yourself, the "cheap" quote is not finished.
  2. Selling online. A storefront means a catalog, checkout, payments, shipping and tax. OneLittleWeb puts features like e-commerce, dashboards or integrations at an extra $5,000–$20,000+ each.
  3. Bookings, portals and integrations. Anything that connects to software you already run on is custom work and gets scoped separately.
  4. Search work. Basic on-page SEO (titles, descriptions, structure) should be included. Keyword research and page structure built around what people search is a step up.
  5. Page count. It matters, but less than people expect. Ten pages built on one well-made design cost far less than ten one-off designs.
  6. Speed and quality of build. A site that loads in under two seconds on a mid-range phone takes more engineering than one that looks fine on the designer's laptop.

The yearly costs nobody quotes up front

The build is one number. Keeping the site online, secure and current is another — and it arrives every year. OneLittleWeb estimates domains, hosting, maintenance and marketing together run 15–30% of the build cost each year. The individual line items look like this:

ItemTypical costSource
Domain name$10 – $20 a yearWebnode
Shared hosting$3 – $15 a monthWebnode
Managed hosting$25 – $100 a monthWebnode
Business email~$6 – $12 per user, per monthWebnode
Maintenance on a WordPress site$200 – $1,200 a yearWebnode

A builder like Wix or Squarespace bundles hosting into its plan — Webnode puts those plans at free to about $25 a month — but the updates, edits and fixes are still yours to do. Before you sign with anyone, ask who updates the site after launch, how fast, and what that costs.

How long it takes, and why that affects price

Webnode puts a typical freelance timeline at 2–8 weeks. The spread usually comes from the back-and-forth: waiting on content, photos and approvals. The fastest engagements are the ones where the designer shows you a real design early, so decisions happen in days instead of weeks.

Full details are on our services and pricing page, and you can browseexample designs for contractors, restaurants, clinics and law firms.

Five questions to ask before you accept any quote

  1. Is this a flat price, and what exactly would make it change?
  2. Who writes the page copy — you or me?
  3. Who owns the domain, the content and the site files if we part ways?
  4. What does it cost per year to keep the site online and updated?
  5. Will I see a design before I commit to the full build?

FAQ

How much should a business website cost in 2026?

A professionally designed site of five to ten pages usually lands in the low-to-mid thousands. Webnode puts freelance builds at $500–$5,000, and OneLittleWeb puts mid-sized business sites at $5,000–$25,000. DIY builders cost less up front but leave the design, writing and upkeep to you.

What are the ongoing costs after a website launches?

At minimum a domain ($10–$20 a year) and hosting ($3–$15 a month shared, $25–$100 a month managed, per Webnode). OneLittleWeb estimates domains, hosting, maintenance and marketing together add 15–30% of the build cost every year.

Is a Wix or Squarespace site cheaper than hiring a designer?

In cash, yes: builder plans run from free to about $25 a month, according to Webnode. The real cost is your time and the result — you design, write, optimize and maintain it yourself.
